Build Healthy Habits While Working from Home – Lessons from Salesforce

Though many states have slowly reopened, many individuals continue to work from home and plan to through 2021, whether because of personal choice or encouragement from their employer.

Whether you’re new to working from home or are a seasoned vet, there are still many things we can all learn about building healthy habits while working from home, especially in these times of uncertainty.

In the Salesforce Trailhead unit, “Build Healthy Habits,” we learn exactly how to do this. Salesforce walks us through:

  • How to identify new healthy habits we want to build
  • and How to deploy new strategies for making small changes that deliver big impact

Our regular routines have been reimagined over the course of the past few months – there’s no denying that.

Despite these changes, there are many ways we can upkeep our routines in new ways.

First, Salesforce encourages us to maintain connections. This is so important!

Staying at home likely means we’re not seeing our friends, families, and colleagues face-to-face unless we lived with friends and family before this societal shift.

Still, maintaining human connections remains crucial to our daily lives and existence – luckily, many of us have access to technology that allows us to maintain these essential connections.

To upkeep relationships with your colleagues, friends, and family, Salesforce recommends that you complete actions like:

  • Setting up a weekly phone call with your friends or family, and with colleagues, as is appropriate to your function
  • Arranging a weekly video call with your friends or family, and with colleagues, as is appropriate to your function
  • Setting up a weekly or biweekly virtual happy hour with your colleagues to engage with them on a more personal and empathetic level
  • Sending emails, texts, or e-cards to the people you care about
  • Starting an online discussion space with your colleagues
  • And more

Next, Salesforce encourages all trailblazers to stay active. Many of these habits have always been important to our overall health and wellbeing, but perhaps especially now.

Remember to:

  • Walk, jog, bike, run, hike, do yoga or pilates, etc. – whatever form of exercise you like best! Now is a great time to figure out what that is, whether you spend more time outdoors staying active or find a new indoor-friendly exercise to enjoy.
  • Follow an exercise routine that works for you – hold yourself accountable for doing something you can every day, whether it’s a 15-minute stretching routine, 30 minutes on the treadmill, or a bike ride around the neighborhood.
  • Stretch throughout the workday – you don’t want to sit in your at-home office chair too long.
  • And more

Third, Salesforce reminds us to get creative! What does this mean? Expand your hobbies.

Stimulate your mind when you:

  • Put together puzzles
  • Play board games
  • Draw pictures
  • Write stories, poems, or blogs
  • Build something with LEGOs
  • Knit, sew, embroider, or crochet
  • Play an instrument, dance, or sing
  • And so much more…

Finally, Salesforce reminds us to relax. It may feel easier said than done, but it’s important to be mindful of and care for your mental state throughout these times especially. Happiness is something we have to earn daily throughout our lives.

Activities that contribute to a positive mental state and a relaxed mind may include:

  • Reading a book or magazine
  • Doing a Sudoku puzzle
  • Chatting with a loved one on the phone
  • Writing a poem
  • Trying a new recipe
  • Learning a new skill
  • Meditating
  • And much, much more

As you can see, there is overlap among these activities that contribute to your overall self-motivation. Dive into the details when you complete the unit yourself.
