Do you ever have the feeling you’re entering duplicate information into your Dynamics 365/CRM environment?

If you answered yes to this question, you’ve stumbled across the right post!

Creating Child Records from a Parent Record brings over certain data that you’ve already entered on the Parent, and places that on the Child Record.

So, for example, you may be creating an Opportunity (Child) from an Account (Parent).

If you think about a Contact who works at a company, they usually have the same address and phone number as the Company, so those records will pull over, but they can be changed or added if you need them to be.

You can notify your System Admin about which information is relevant for pulling over.

This process can provide many benefits to your system and day-to-day practices …


To start this process, go to the Account (parent) you want to create a child record from.

For this example, we use an imaginary account called, “City Power & Lights”.

We are going to create a Contact on the Sub-grid from “City Power & Lights”.

To do this, we are going to look at the right-hand side of our screen under the “Primary Contact” section.

Once your screen loads, you will see existing contacts under this Account.

You will also see a “+” symbol appear. Click on this symbol to add a Contact to this Account.

Some elements will directly pull over. In this scenario, the Account Name, Business Phone, Street, City, and ZIP/Postal Code have pulled over.

All you should need to do is input information that is truly unique to this Contact, such as their first and last name, job title, email, or if they have a personal mobile number – whatever you deem fitting.

Once you’ve added all the information you have, click “Save”.

If Duplicates are Detected, you will be alerted. You can either remedy this, or bypass it if you are searching by address, for example, and other Contacts appear due to the fact that they have the same address.

If all of the exact same unique information appears, however, you likely won’t want to continue.

When you’ve successfully saved your new Contact under this Account, it should appear in the “Primary Contact” section referenced earlier in this post.

For this example, we’ve added “Michael Dodds”.

If you open up this Contact, you will see a new record that has been associated with them.

This will save you time while creating Contact Records in the long-run.

Insights, Activities, and Notes will start being caught and pulled into this record.
