Microsoft Outlook unveiled a new feature earlier this summer that allows users to categorize emails under a new filter called, “Tracked to Dynamics 365.”

Within the community, this feature is generating a lot of buzz.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 confirms the feature can be applied to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement Apps V9.0 and V8.2 Online.

Microsoft says, “Server-side synchronization now allows tracking of emails, appointments and tasks in Outlook with a special category, Tracked to Dynamics 365.”

By assigning this category to an email, appointment, or task in Microsoft Outlook, it is synced to Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement.

If you wish and choose to un-track it, it is removed from Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement too.

The system allows you to select multiple items and assign the “Tracked for Dynamics 365” Outlook Category to them, Microsoft informs.

If you have V9.0 or higher, the category tracking is enabled by default.

Microsoft reminds users, to check on the version they have, to navigate to Settings > About.

Once you have it enabled in your Microsoft Dynamics 365 environment, here’s how it works to track emails, appointments, and tasks:

Synchronization takes 15 minutes once the email is tracked.

As stated above, if you decide to un-track it, it will be un-tracked, however, the associated activity record in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement apps is not deleted.

Appointments are tracked in much the same way that email is, and the same rules apply.

If you un-track it in Outlook, it will be un-tracked within Microsoft Dynamics 365, but the associated activity record will not be automatically deleted as a result.

Microsoft issues a special warning to task tracking.

They warn users: “Assignment of tasks to people that is captured in Outlook will not be synced to Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement.”
