On July 17 and 18, non-preview instances will be upgraded, while preview instances will be upgraded on May 29 and 30, 2020.
Sandbox preview instances grant users early access to take advantage of new features, functionality, and customizations that come with the release.
Salesforce says, “if you are a Sandbox customer, you can get early access if you have an active preview instance before that date.”
They advise that in most cases “you may not need to do anything because your sandbox is already on a preview instance.”

Sandbox instances are split into two groups – preview and non-preview.
Users can refer to the image (right) to determine when they will have access to the summer 2020 release.
Salesforce informs users that “between now and May 29, 2020, all sandbox requests will be routed to preview instances.”
This means “Sandboxes complete in time for the major release on May 29, 2020, will be upgraded to the newest version of Salesforce.”
While “incomplete sandbox requests will be reset on a non-preview instance, and pending and new sandbox requests, will be routed to non-preview instances until your production instance is upgraded to Summer 2020.”
Users have until May 29, 2020, to decide whether or not they’d like to partake in the summer 2020 preview.
