The Situation

Sojourner

Sojourner Family Peace Center of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a unique operation in that it is a nonprofit partnership of fourteen organizations that exist in the same building and serve the same families.

These organizations work collaboratively on cases to ensure the privacy and safety of the people that go to them for help.

Sojourner Family Peace Center is dedicated to helping support and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, laying a foundation of safety, healing, and peace for each client.

When Sojourner was searching for a solution to help them meet their unique needs, they lacked a virtual infrastructure that every organization could use to securely manage each case as a unit instead of separate entities. These fourteen organizations originally had their own disconnected software that proved problematic in terms of communication, standardization of processes, and collaboration.

“This is a major gap we sought to address with a new system,” says Dr. Erin Schubert, Director of Outcomes and Evaluation at Sojourner.

Dr. Schubert says Sojourner’s goal was to provide clients with equal access and referral opportunities between the organizations without duplicating efforts or needing to relocate them to different buildings for help.

After evaluating firms that responded to their request for proposal (RFP) and through a strong nonprofit peer referral, Dr. Schubert and her team decided to work with Ledgeview and Salesforce. The personalized demo they received set Ledgeview apart on Sojourner’s quest to move their centralized resource center into a centralized digital space.

The Solution

Salesforce came out on top compared to other CRM solutions for its customization capabilities and considering the uniqueness of their partnerships. A cookie-cutter solution was not going to make the grade.

“During the Ledgeview demo, it was unanimous that we go with Salesforce and Ledgeview,” says Tristan Gross, O&E Project Manager – Centralized Data System and Men & Boys at Sojourner. “This is for a few reasons… Number one, it was clear that the demo Ledgeview put together in the Salesforce Sandbox environment that the original proposal was well-reviewed.”

“Ledgeview took the time to understand the language of our industry and the dynamic of our partnership. In that demo, the person facilitating it spoke to all of our concerns. Whereas other demos had technical issues, we could barely hear them, and they did not do any work to rectify that. They were out-of-the-box and conceptual solutions.”

“Ledgeview showed us how it would work and how it would meet our needs. It was really clear during the process, from the technical match-up to the customization of Salesforce, in addition to Ledgeview’s customer service, that Ledgeview and Salesforce were the right way to go,” Gross says.

From an end-user perspective, the Sojourner team found Salesforce to be an intuitive product.

“From the Ledgeview demo, it became clear that the dreams we had for a new solution were technologically-possible with Salesforce,” Dr. Schubert says.

Salesforce stood out as a highly customizable product that met all of Sojourner’s security needs, provided a user-friendly user interface, and had a lot of potential with existing integrations via Salesforce AppExchange.

Sojourner saw what was possible with Salesforce and seized it.

Gross says Salesforce forced the organizations to have collaborative conversations in a collective environment that allowed them to have shared processes and language while building a culture of communication.

The team is heavily focused on user adoption and looks forward to the months ahead as they move into deeper project phases.

“Communicating between partners is really difficult,” Gross says. “The Chatter functionality of Salesforce will really help us with that. The Groups and Files functionality of Salesforce will help us facilitate committees.”

“I can’t underscore enough, the user interface. Qualitatively, as we’ve been trying to get the solution in front of as many staff and supervisors as possible, we’ve gotten overwhelmingly positive feedback about the uniformity, organization, and accessibility of the system,” Gross says.

Sojourner’s relationship with Ledgeview has evolved throughout the Salesforce development process.

“Ledgeview has been very flexible and responsive,” Dr. Schubert says. “We have had a great working relationship with them. I would second the original recommendation we received about Ledgeview.”

“The peace of mind the Ledgeview team provides is huge,” Gross says. “Ledgeview was very patient, knowledgeable, and they always provided us with options.”

Together, Salesforce and Sojourner have created a Centralized Data System that gives them a place to house all their metrics and allows them to identify how they’re doing as an agency and where they can improve.

Excitingly, this uniquely created hub will be available to other nonprofits soon.
